Large yellow Sienna marble-plated mantle clock ornated with gilt bronze palmettes and scrollwork. Surmounted with patinated bronze Venus Pudica statuette accomapnied by a turtle, after a model by Antoine Coysevox.
Cracked glass on back bezel.
The original statue realized by Antoine Coysevox in 1686, after an Antiquity model, is now in the Louvre collections, Paris.
A comprarable mantle clock with same statuette is in France’s Mobilier National collections inder the reference GML 8937.
A mantle clock with the same subject was commisioned to decroate the Duke of Bordeaux’s apartment in Tuileries garden un 1822. In “César Birotteau”, Honoré de Balzac described the interior as “Sur la cheminée en marbre blanc, la pendule représentait la Vénus accroupie sur un beau bloc de marbre” (On the white marble chimney, the mantle clock representing a kneeling Venus on a fine marble block).
